Vexed, I aim to please, forgot Dorset at the top of that list. Depends if your commuting in or not. I don't know Essex very well, but I know there is good and bad there as most places.

One Mac
As both my parents and 4 older siblings were all born and bref in Kent I suppose I should be offended by this. However I will put it down to ignorance on your part.

Re: kent

There are some very picturesque villages surrounding Sevenoaks town if we are generalizing, however there are many other just as nice parts elsewhere in Kent. As I said there are plenty of not so nice parts.
Like most places it comes down to money, if you have it you can afford to live in the best parts.
If I were to live outside the smoke my top 6 would be something like this..
Surrey Buckinghamshire Berkshire Oxfordshire Gloucestershire West Sussex

This Kent/Essex thing is a very one way rivalry, very much like Leyton Orient/West Ham.
Essex being West Ham obviously.

This garden of England thing. I keep hearing two theories. One that it's was England's 'bread basket' and two because it was very green. I tend to go for one as its basically a motorway an Medway.

'How did Gravesend get it's name?'
That's a long story but it 100% NOT why you think it is, Gravesham was recorded in the Domesday Book in 1086 and the black death happened nearly 250 years later!
Zzzzzz!

Re: kent

"In the 11th century, the people of Kent adopted the motto Invicta, meaning "undefeated". This naming followed the invasion of Britain by William of Normandy. The Kent people's continued resistance against the Normans led to Kent's designation as a semi-autonomous county palatine in 1067."
Meanwhile the cowardly people of Anglia (which the area now known as Essex was part of then) were happily bending over and taking it up the arse from the French.
